Editorial Reviews
From Booklist
This overview of major health issues affecting women updates information included in earlier editions. There are more than 1,000 articles ranging in length from two sentences to several pages. Coverage include male and female reproductive systems, the aging process, diet, exercise, medical tests and procedures, alternative therapies, and diseases and disorders that affect women.Articles have been revised to eliminate obsolete information and include new advances in treatment of Alzheimer's, AIDS, and osteoporosis and the latest research on hormone-replacement therapy. Entries are concisely written in an encyclopedic style. Topics and terms are described and explained and pertinent background information may be given. For example, Abortion covers not only the medical procedure but also the legal and moral controversy surrounding the issue, though the psychological aspects are not discussed. Cosmetic procedures are included but get only a general article, Cosmetic surgery, rather than entries for specific procedures such as blepharoplasty and rhinoplasty.Line drawings and information boxes containing charts and lists supplement some articles. Small caps are used within articles to identify terms that have their own entries, though this is not always consistent. The Menopause article mentions estrogen replacement therapy but not in small caps, although Estrogen replacement therapy is a main entry. See also references are listed at the end of articles. There is no bibliography, but there is a topical resource list. Organization addresses and phone numbers are provided but not Web addresses. There are many very good guides to women's health. The Women's Complete Health Book (Delacorte, 1995) and The Harvard Guide to Women's Health (1996) both focus on providing consumer-health information. Although The New A to Z of Women's Health is an adequate ready-reference source and has the advantage of more current treatment information, it needs to be supplemented with other titles to give complete coverage of medical topics.
